On the 18th of April 1872, a local newspaper called Fovárosi Lapok heralded firstly the establishment of a new hotel in the heart of Budapest. The completion of the construction work was in May 1872 which coincided the time when Buda, Pest and Óbuda had been unified. The name was chosen after Queen Elizabeth. In 1985, the hotel underwent a major reconstruction work which involved the expansion of guest room capacity, the installation of air-conditioning system and a modern exterior design has been introduced.
